The Pembroke Beautification Committee is teaming up with the City of Pembroke to offer another year of Earth Month Contests!

Earth Month Challenge

When: April 1-30

Challenge Details: Challenge yourself to 30 days of daily action that supports environmental sustainability! The Beautification and Climate Action Committee has created a user-friendly calender with busy individuals in mind. Each day features a quick action you can do to minimize your impact on Earth! 

How to use the Calender:

With your kids

    • Each day, do the activities with your kids. Once complete, mark off the day with a sticker! (Stickers can be requested at the Parks & Recreation Department, in the Pembroke Memorial Centre)
    • Submit a photo of your finished calendar to recreation@pembroke.ca for your chance to win!

On your own

    • Challenge yourself to 30 days of Earth conscious activities.
    • Take photos of yourself/your friends participating in any of these activities for your chance to win!
    • All photos must be submitted in one email to recreation@pembroke.ca. Added points for creativity & excitement!

The Prize: The grand prize includes an outdoor recreation-themed gift basket valued at $100!

April 7: Go Cloud Watching at your favourite Pembroke Park!

April 8: Take a ride using Pembroke’s public transit system. Pembroke.ca/Transit

April 9: Pack a waste free lunch today.

April 10: Plan your meals for next week to reduce food waste and take advantage of sales.

April 11: Research and learn about endangered species in the Ottawa Valley.

April 12: Start a kitchen compost! See if you can keep it up for a week!

April 13: Go on a neighborhood litter clean-up. Pick up gloves and bags at the PMC!

April 14: Look up local farmers markets and make plans to visit one when they open!

April 15: Have a screen free night! Read a book, go for a walk, or play a board game!

April 16: Pack a waste free lunch today.

April 17: Eye spy birds! Pick a bird, go on a walk, and try to find it!

April 18: Go on a nature themed photoshoot in your neighborhood!

 

April 19: Take your bike to your favorite ice cream shop!

April 20: Try for a "Meatless Mondays" today!

April 21: Research online to see how people in other countries celebrate Earth Day!

April 22: Earth Day!

April 23: Pack a waste free lunch today.

April 26: Data Centres accounts for 1% of GHG emissions. Research on ways to reduce your digital footprint!

April 27: Cycle or walk to work/school!

April 28: Go for a waste-free picnic. Avoid single use plastics and takeout!

April 29: Research “Circular Economy” and learn about how current consumer habits

April 30: Pack a waste free lunch today.

 

  • Children should be accompanied by an adult; keep the kids safe.
  • Wear protective gloves or use tongs to pick up garbage.
  • Do not handle sharps or used needles; use tongs and place the item in a hard, sealable container.
  • Take pictures of your clean-up efforts and email them to recreation@pembroke.ca with subject line "Earth Day Clean-Up" for a chance to win a prize. Photos must be received by 4:00 pm, April 30.
  • Take the collected garbage home with you and put it at the curb on your scheduled garbage pick-up day.
  • Work only in daylight hours and wear bright clothing so that you are visible to traffic.
  • Watch for traffic and stay well to the side of any road; watch the kids.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly when you get home.

School Contest

Returning for the second year, the Pembroke's Beautification and Climate Action Committee is inviting schools within the City to be part of our Earth Month celebration. School classes can take on any of a variety of projects that will benefit the Earth, then tell us about their projects for a chance to win a pizza party, courtesy of Joe's Family Pizzeria.

Steps to Participate

  • Choose an activity or project that will benefit or promote a healthy Earth
  • Work on your project and take photos!
  • Teachers submit their class project to the Pembroke Parks and Recreation Department at recreation@pembroke.ca with the following information:
    • school name and class
    • photos of the class at work on the project or activity
    • a brief description of your Earth Week project or activity
    • deadline for submission to Parks and Rec. is April 30th.

From the entries submitted, one class will be drawn to receive a pizza party donated by Joes Family Pizzeria. Notification to the teacher will be made by Parks and Recreation staff. The winning entry will be highlighted on our social media.
