Criminal record checks and police checks are required for a variety of purposes including employment, adoption, international travel, volunteer work, citizenship, name change, student placement or to obtain a record suspension (formerly pardon).
The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) can complete criminal record checks only for individuals who live in their jurisdiction.
To get a criminal record check, follow these steps.
Step 1: Download, fill out and print the application form.
Step 2: Bring the completed form, along with two pieces of identification* to the Pembroke OPP Detachment at 77 International Drive on Tuesdays or Thursdays between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. for processing.
*Acceptable forms of identification include:
- Driver's license
- Birth certificate
- Valid passport
- Outdoors card
The OPP cannot accept a health card or social insurance number card as identification for a criminal record check.
Processing can take six to eight weeks, and the fee for a criminal record check for employment purposes is $25. There is no fee for those who require a criminal record check for volunteer purposes; however, those applicants must supply a letter of confirmation from the agency with which they are volunteering.
